On Steve McNair

So let me get this straight.

A former pro bowl quaterback was running around behind his wife’s back, with a drug addict cocktail waitress – and the wife had no idea there were any problems in the relationship while the drug addict cocktail waitress had told her family that she was selling her furniture to move in with Mr. Quarterback since he was in the process of divorcing his wife (which wasn’t happening) and then . . . . something happens to make her want to shoot this guy and then kills herself (like, perhaps . . . and I’m just speculating here – Mr. Quarterback told her he was married and not getting a divorce) and we are supposed to think this is the gun’s fault??

Right.

This time, in honor of his Annoited One, it comes from funky groovster and black panther left wing freakoid Gil Scott Heron. I think Shockra’s cover is better – but I can’t find a copy online (I will try to upload a copy)

Gun
Lyrics by Gil Scott Heron

Brother Man nowadays living in the ghetto
Where the danger’s sure enough real
Well when he’s out late at night
and if he’s got his head on right
Well, I lay you 9 to 5 he’s walking with steel.

Brother Man says he’s ‘fraid of gangsters
Messing with people just for fun
He don’t want to be next
He got a family to protect
So just last week he bought himself a gun.

Everybody got a pistol, everybody got a .45
And the philosophy seem to be
At least as near as I can see
When other folks give up theirs, I’ll give up mine.

This is a violent civilization
If civilization’s where I am
Every channel that I stop on
Got a different kind of cop on
Killing them by the million for Uncle Sam

Saturday night just ain’t that special
Yeah, I got the constitution on the run
‘Cause even though we’ve got the right
To defend our home, to defend our life
Got to understand to get it in hand about the guns

Everybody got a pistol, everybody got a .45
And the philosophy seem to be
At least as near as I can see
When other folks give up theirs, I’ll give up mine.

Saturday night just ain’t that special
Freedom to be afraid is all you want
Yes if you don’t want to be next
You’ve got a family to protect
9 out of 10, you’ve got a friend, you’ve got a gun.

Everybody got a pistol, everybody got a .45
And the philosophy seem to be
At least as near as I can see
When other folks give up theirs, I’ll give up mine.

Everybody got a pistol, this must please the NRA
Yeah ’cause when it’s time to shine up
You know damn well they’re gonna line up
Everybody…

And the philosophy seem to be
At least as near as I can see
When other folks give up theirs, I’ll give up mine

One Less Criminal

Sorry if I don’t get all the false tears over the death of Sean Taylor. In fact, as far as I’m concerned, we ought to be celebrating one less criminal from society.

Remember

Taylor began his N.F.L. career with the Redskins inauspiciously. He was fined $25,000 by the league even before he played a single down. After signing a 7-year, $18 million contract, he left a rookie symposium early and was reprimanded by the league. There was a gun incident in June 2005 and that on-field spitting incident in the 2006 playoffs, as well as fines for illegal hits and uniform violations.

An $18 million dollar contract and they thought a 21 year old would care about a piddling $25,000 fine? Come on!!

And about those other run ins . . .

Since the Redskins drafted Taylor, the safety has had several brushes with the law and National Football League rules. Taylor was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault with a firearm for allegedly brandishing a gun in a Miami neighborhood in 2005.

Taylor reached a plea agreement and avoided jail time, but was fined $71,764 by the NFL for violating the personal conduct clause of his contract.

The NFL also has fined Taylor for illegal hits, uniform violations and spitting on Tampa Bay running back Michael Pittman during a playoff game in January 2006. In 2004, Gibbs suspended Taylor for one game after he was arrested for driving under the influence; those charges were later dropped.

Think maybe he would have straightened himself out if he actually suffered some real consequences for being a thug??

Peter King at Sports Illustrated said

it’s another example of senseless gun violence robbing America of another citizen, and we’re all poorer for it.

No, this isn’t about senseless gun violence. Its about free will and the intelligence to make choices in life and suffer the consequences of those choices. Sean Taylor never did suffer for his earlier poor choices. When it finally came time to make amends, it was too late and the results are not only tragic, but all too predictable.

I feel bad for his daughter, but can’t feel sorry for him.

When you play with fire, when you dance with the devil, your going to get burned!

Now back to the beach!

UPDATE

Apparently, some Redskins board linked to this post. Thanks for the traffic guys!!

I’ve allowed a few of the comments to go through, but there’s about 20 which I decided not to simply because they had nothing to say other than variations of “fuck you” or “I hope someone kills you.”

Real classy guys. If you have something relevant to say, say it. You can even swear and say Fuck You, just have something more to your comment.

Regarding the substance of these other comments I let through, as I stated – I feel bad for his daughter and his family. And indeed, its sad when anyone dies. But I think the head in the sand reaction of these guys is just reinforcing my larger point about society willing to strain to look the other way when all is obvious.

Idiot NY Times Reporters (is that redundant??)

That would be PETE THAMEL and THAYER EVANS who, in reporting on the incredible turnover we’ve witnessed at the top of college football and that it looked like Missouri and West Virginia might play for the national championship, stated (in the 2nd paragraph of their story)

With one week remaining in the regular season of this most unpredictable of college football campaigns, a similar possibility may await. The University of Missouri and West Virginia University are each one victory from playing for college football’s national title. Neither university has won a national title in football. Rarely has either one come close.

Well, thats certainly true of Missouri, but not West Virginia.

Over the last 20 years, in fact, West Virginia has fielded a fairly competitive team, playing for the National Championship twice (which, while not at the level of performance of say Florida State, is nothing to sneeze at). If they make it, this will be the third National Championship game they’ve played in (which, for instance, is better than my team the University of Tennessee)

Generally speaking, WVU is the winningest college football program that has never won a National Championship.
Following the 1988 season, AN UNDEFEATED West Virginia, led by All American superstar Major Harris lost in the Fiesta Bowl (and with it, the National Championship) to the only other undefeated team in football, Notre Dame.
Following the 1993 season, AN UNDEFEATED West Virginia, lost in the Sugar Bowl (and with it, a share of a split National Championship) to Florida
In Week 10 of the 2006 season, A THEN undefeated WVU team was ranked #3
Overall, WVU has participated in 25 bowl games; their record stands at 11-15. Major bowls include the Sugar Bowl (3 times), Peach Bowl (4 times), Fiesta Bowl (1 time), and the Gator Bowl (6 times).

Win or lose (right now, with 5 minutes left, it sure does look like Da Vols are gonna blow a huge first half lead) isn’t it time we Fired Phil Fulmer?

UPDATE

Well, I’ll be damned! Fulmer blows a 24-7 halftime lead and still manages to win in the 4th Overtime 52-50.
Think we can beat LSU???

Think we even deserve to be in Atlanta???

Heck no. Fire Phil Fulmer

btw, Ainge had a hell of a game. 400 yards and 7 touchdowns passing. Holy Cow!
