EPIC FAIL

So we are still searching, test drove a Nissan Murano, a Ford Flex and a Ford Edge, and a Toyota FJ Cruiser. The Murano was awful. The Edge was nice, but the angle of the windshield really bothered the wife. Same with the Flex.

She saw a Dodge Nitro and mentioned she’d like to test drive that. So I call the one dealer I know of – Tyson Dodge Jeep to see if they had any – and get an “Im sorry the mail box is full message.”

So I go to the Dodge Web Page – multiple times this weekend – to find another dealer. Its dealer search function is down.

Think Government Run health care will function any better?????

  1. Did you try an Xterra yet? I’ve gone through this recently with the wife and she loves hers.

  2. But Mr. Obama said it would work! Isn’t that enough? /still waiting on my “Obama money” – that’s what the ‘clients’ at my mom’s office are demanding.

  3. Heard the FJ was underpowered and with horrible blind-spots, wouldn’t want a low-torque motor offroad. Why they didn’t see fit to put a V-8 in there is boggling, or even a straight-6 with torque – maybe they were afraid of a runaway accelerator pedal…

  4. I like the Xterra but she doesn’t. We’ve been out in two teat drives in an FJ, but haven’t noticed a problem with it being underpowered. I was really impressed with it.

  5. I sure like the looks of the FJ – but as a full-size truck driver worry a bit about the blind-spots, it’s easy to back into little bitty cars… Heh.

  6. Have you considered the latest permutation of the Honda Passport? When I bought my Isuzu Rodeo back in 2000 I was told it was the car as the Passport except for the badging. Been happy with it for ten years.

  7. emdfl, do they still market the Passport??

Our other car – the one that is shot – is a 2001 Isuzu Rodeo. Its a great vehicle, and I’ve taken it to hell and back. Granted, its not nearly half the truck as the 93 Rodeo we had prior to it – that was a beast and built on an Isuzu pick up frame (still regret selling it). We were lamenting that Isuzu had dropped out of the market, as we really like their products.

  8. A word of warning regarding the Isuzu V-6. The 3.2L engine used in the LX and LXS models apparently likes oil – as in ~one quart every 1000 miles or so. As long as you change the oil every 3K-4k miles, all is good. Going 5K miles or more is going to cause engine failure sooner or later. Mine let me know at 80K miles when I hadn’t had time to do an oil change for about 6K miles.

Mechanics everywhere appear to know this, but apparently Isuzu never felt that their dealers had to mention it to potential buyers. It’ll cost around $3000-$6000 – depending on how you choose to address the problem – to get the vehicle back in operating order.

Oh yeah, the 2000 was the last one built using their truck chassis. I pulled an eight-foot trailer loaded with 5K pounds of ammo with mine and still got 18mpg at highway speeds. So find a used one that is in good shape and go for it.
