Car Purchases

I got a new car. Wife took it. Imsuck of her old car, so she gets another.

Ford Edge vs Hyundai Veracruz

any thoughts?
What else should we look at?

Needs: big enough car for wife, two kids, friend, and an 87 pound dog. And all wheel drive. And cup holders.
Can’t be made by Government Motors. Less oppossed to Chrysler, simply because it’s not Gov’t Motors, but not a fan either.

She wanted a Honda Element, but they only have two seats in rear.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

  1. Well, my thoughts on this are: motorcycles – Japanese, cars – German, anything else, American, if possible (do Glocks count?). Having said that, I’m presently quite a few miles away from home but from I’m hearing from a bunch of people here that they’re looking into the new Focus which is (more or less, I guess) already on sale in Europe (never really bothered to check it out as I hate the Focus with a passion but I hear the new one is much better than what I had to endure) and should come out in the US soon. Unless your wife minds driving a slightly underpowered wagon, it should fit the bill. But then again, it’s probably going to be smallish. The Europeans tend to supersize their wagons but, well, if the Audi A6 wagon is going to be any indication, it probably won’t exactly be enormous. Sorry. I guess I’m not being much help here.

  2. Subaru makes fantastic cars. All of them are AWD.

If you were willing to forgo AWD, the Toyota Camry is excellent (I have a 2006 model, and it’s fantastic). Honda Accord is another FWD vehicle similar to the Camry, and is also excellent.

My fiancee recently purchased a Toyota RAV4, their small SUV. While it’s available in AWD versions, she got the FWD version as it was slightly cheaper and she doesn’t intend to go off-roading or have any other need for AWD (we live in Arizona, so ice/snow isn’t an issue). Again, excellent car.

I’ve not been terribly impressed with “domestic” cars as of late.

  3. John K – My preference would actually be to get a Volkswagon Jetta Sportswagon with the diesel power plant. And we may still do that – if the car ends up being mine instead of my wife’s. She won’t drive a stationwagon.

Pete – Her parents have two Subarus, a Forester and an Outback. Both are great cars, but like I said, her parents have them and it wil be a cold day in hell before she drives what her parents do.

    RAV 4 is too small.

I understand about no being impressed with domestic cars – but the Ford is one of a couple that we like. I really like the Jeep Commander, and cant’ wait to get it back.

  4. I’ve heard really good things about the Flex, and it’s almost the same price.

Unless you need it to be smaller…
